what's on my Painting Table - Death Guard Helbrute

On Sunday I finally got a full day to myself so I decided to get some painting done.  Top priority on my list of "things to paint" was my new Helbrute miniature.  I mainly wanted to get it finished as I have a game of 40K scheduled for a week on Wednesday (My first playing with 7th edition rules!) and it was going to form part of my Helbrute formation so wanted to have it fully painted to match the rest of my force.

I also decided that I wanted to paint up one of my heavy weapons marines from my Devastator Squad.  I went for one of the Las-cannons.  You'll also notice that I've made a small start on painting up my Ork Stormboyz.

Da Mek's Workshop - Converted Helbrute

I've finally got round to constructing the third Helbrute to complete my deep striking detachment of them which I've nicknamed the Three Hel-Megos.

For the third member I decided to do a conversion, using parts left of from the Helbrute kit, a Venerable Dreadnought and some bits from my bitz box.  Here is the finished result.

The Helbrute has been equipped with close combat weapons, to represent that at some point in his life the Space Marine encased within was once part of an assault squad.  This give the Hel-Megos a representative from Tactical, Devastator and Assault detachments.

Green stuff was needed to fill the holes between the arms and the torso.

Bullet holes have been added.

Now to paint him.  I'm tempted to give him a Death Guards colour scheme as I think this would look cool.

What's on my Painting Table - Objective Markers

In my last Mek's Workshop post I was talking about making some some objective markers for 40K after getting inspiration from an article in last weeks White Dwarf.  Well I've now managed to get them painted and here are the end results.

Objective Markers 1. (an unexploded Ork bomb) 2. (An Imperial Vox Caster) and 3. (A downed Tau Drone)

Objective Markers 4. (An Ammo dump) 5. (An Alien Device) and 6. (An Ork Grave)

The complete set

Hopefully I'll get to use these in my next game of 40K (which will also by my first using the new 7th edition rules)

TIP OF THE WEEK

If like me you like to protect your painted miniatures with 'Ardcoat you can take the shine of it by applying a layer of Lahmian Medium once the 'Ardcoat has fully dried.

"Someone must have told them about my little meanouver at the battle ot Tenab" I try my first game of Star Wars X-Wing

For Christmas 2013 I received a copy of Fantasy Flights Star Wars X-Wing miniature game as 1. I'm a massive fan of Star Wars and 2.I like table top games.  However it's only been until now that I've finally got around to playing it.

I have to say that after playing a few games to learn the rules I was amazed just how simple and addictive it is.  It really captures the action of the movies and gives you possibly the closest experience of dogfighting in a galaxy far, far away that you can get (and I've played Star Wars Rogue Squadron!).

At first we started with the basic game rules, playing with 60 points each to get use to the game, but then we decided to move on to include some upgrade cards into the mix.

What I enjoyed the most about the game was the whole strategy behind dogfighting.  Having to predict how your opponent would move, or which is the better target to shoot at really made you have to use your brain.  Anyway here are some photos from the session.

I'm itching to play some more X-Wing, especially as I now have a Y-Wing and TIE-Bomber to try out and can't wait for my next game.

Da Mek's Workshop - Objective markers

Inspired by this weeks issue of White Dwarf I decided to have a go at making some of my own Objective markers to use in 40K.

After having a good rummage through my Bitz Box I managed to find enough interesting looking items to use for my objective markers.

Bitz found! now to make the markers

Some of the tools I'll need.
I decided to make my 6 objectives a mixture of different items, to reflect the different races in the 40k universe.  As such I ended up with two Imperial markers, 2 Ork markers, I Tau marker and 1 "mysterious item" marker.

The finished markers

This Vox-caster objective marker was the easiest to make and came straight from he pages of White Dwarf.

This downed Tau Drone was also inspired by White Dwarf.  I've added some bullet holes to it by using the hobby drill.

These spare demolition charges/ammo packs make a great objective to secure.

This is one of my Ork themed objectives.  Could it represent the grave of a fallen Ork Warboss or does it mark the location of a secret deposit of Ork Teeth?

All that's left to do now is to paint, number and base them.  Then they'll be ready to hit the battlefield!
