What's on my painting table? - Roboute Guilliman

Over the Christmas break I managed to finish another miniature in my collection, this one being Roboute Guilliman.

I decided to paint him in gold armour, as in my 40k narrative I feel that Roboute is starting to show signs of delusions of grandeur since his return.  I picture him starting to mimic his father, The Emperor both in appearance and manor having helped in the creation of the Primaris Marines and being the Lord Commander of the Imperium.

For my Blood Angels he is seen as their saviour, after he helped them defend Baal, however some of the captains are starting to suspect Roboute Guilliman and the Primaris.

I’m fairly happy with how this miniature turned out though it’s not my best work and I’m not too keen on how the gold armour turned out.  Game wise he’ll be used as any allie for my Blood Angels, especially in large games.

What's on my painting table - Blood Angels Primaris Lieutenant

I spent this Boxing Day painting up the new Blood Angels Primaris Lieutenant, ahead of my next game of 40K.  Here’s the end result.

This Lieutenant is part of the 5th company.

My Imperial Knight also got a recent upgrade with the addition of a new missile pod for it’s carapace.

The Last Jedi review - Warning Spoilers!

I’ve now seen the Last Jedi twice (the first time was at the midnight screening at my local Picturehouse cinema) so I thought it was about time for me to write a review of it and let you know my reactions and thoughts.

Now, as a warning to those of you who have yet to see the film this review will include SPOILERS so if you haven’t seen the movie and don’t want to find out what happens I suggest not reading any further then this point, so don’t say I didn’t warn you!

My overall reaction to this movie is that I absolutely loved it.  It took me a while to process this opinion as so much happens in the movie which I think will divide fans, and it was only really after the second viewing that I cemented my thoughts and emotions to what I had seen.  Now this is not to say that the film is not without its flaws (which I’ll talk a more about later) but for me personally I felt this movie delivered exactly what I wanted and expected, and Rian Johnson has now set the Star Wars franchise off on a new direction.

SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT.....

Okay so now we can get down to the details of this movie and why I enjoyed it so much.  Ever since we were introduced to Rey and Kylo Ren (Ben Solo) in The Force Awakens we were clear that Luke Skywalker was going to play a big part in their narratives.  For Rey he would be her new mentor, the person to help her understand who she was and what her destiny will be whilst for Klyo Ren he is the target of his rage and anger, the person he must confront and defeat to fully embrace the darkside.
Rian Johnson delivers this in the Last Jedi, but not in the way some fans expected.

When Rey finds Luke he is a broken man who has cut himself off from the force and wants nothing to do with the galaxy.  He blames himself for Ben Solo turning to the darkside because he sensed the growing darkness within him and considered (all be it for a few seconds) ending Ben Solo’s life to spare the galaxy of a new Vader.  This emotional decision haunted Luke (and ultimately pushed Ben towards Snoke) and caused him to isolate himself.  When we meet Luke it’s clear he is full of shame and regret.  He refuses to re-join the Resistance and to train Rey.  This is not the Luke Skywalker we were expecting, he is fallible, and has made mistakes.

Rey in return is shocked at who she finds.  She’s expecting the Luke Skywalker of legend, but instead this Luke is more human.  She discovers more about Luke and what happened between him and Kylo Ren, which in turn makes Luke reconsider his actions.  There is a lovely scene after Rey leaves the island where Luke speaks to the force ghost of Yoda, who has returned to throw some much-needed perspective on his plight and help him to be at peace with the decisions he has made.

Then we have the showdown between Luke and Klyo Ren at the climax of the movie.  This was more of an emotional showdown rather than a physical one, with Luke coming to terms with his mistakes, the destiny of Ben Solo and the fact that he will not be the last Jedi.  His force powers are shown to full extent and as Rey says he is “at peace” by the time the film ends.

Things are not going smooth for the Resistance either, who for the first time in any Star Wars movie genuinely feel under threat and are almost wiped out off the face of the galaxy by the end of the film.  We get some great moments from Poe, who’s arrogance and hot headiness costs the resistance dearly and his reluctance to trust anyone who isn’t Leia almost derails the rebels hope of survival.

We also get to learn who Rey’s parents are and when the reveal comes (thanks to Kylo Ren), it is one of the best twists in the film.  The fact that Rey is a nobody, that her parents sold her for money to aid their drinking and that deep-down Rey knew this tells us that anyone can be special, you don’t have to be a Skywalker or a Kenobi to be strong in the force.  I know this reveal will annoy a lot of fans who were hoping that Rey might be Luke’s daughter or a relative of a powerful Jedi but the fact that she is no one adds so much more to her character.  This reveal also mirrors that of Kylo Rens upbringing.  A powerful force user with Skywalker blood, which added pressure on him and his destiny.

For what I loved about the movie there were also some things I hated.    Snoke was a big disappointment and the fact that his backstory was not explored or explained meant we were left with a very two-dimensional villain that we still know nothing about such as how he managed to bring the Empire back.

Captain Phasma was also once again underused, being in this film less than she was in the Force Awakens.  Although her showdown with Finn was entertaining the whole thing felt forced and almost thrown in because a board member said, “Hey we need to sell more Phasma toys!”.
Again, they also missed an excellent opportunity to put Lando into this film as he could have easily have been the codebreaker or taken the place of Maz.  Hopefully we’ll get to see him pop up in Episode 9.

But besides from these minor quibbles I really enjoyed the movie and think it’s a great addition to the franchise.  I’m excited to see where the trilogy will go next as we are now truly in uncharted territory.

What's on my painting table - more Shadespire

It was payday this week so I decided to pop into my local Games Workshop during my lunch break and buy the Orruks Warband and dice (mainly to help me build a better Stormcast deck, but also because I like Orks!).

I wanted to get this warband painted up sap, and as I had a free weekend I thought that would be the perfect time to work on them, so here are the end results.

This orruck's pose reminds me of the plastic Orks you use to get in Space Crusade

Waaaagh!

No Orruk leader would be seen dead without blood on his weapons!

I decided to dirty up the armour of my Orruks to show that they'd been in Shadespire for a while and as such had been in several skirmishes.

I decided to paint my warband a lot darker than the yellow scheme GW went with.  Mainly to fit the darkness of Shadespire and make the Orruks look like much more of a threat.

What's on my painting table? - Plague Surgeon

This week I managed to finish painting my Plague Surgeon for my Death Guard army.  I decided to paint him a different colour to the rest of my Death Guard to try and make him stand out on the battle field and also to do it as a test to see what this colour scheme would look like for when I get round to painting Typhus and, at some point Mortarian.

The Last Jedi - My predictions

With The Last Jedi only a few weeks away from release I thought I’d come up with my top 10 thing I think will happen in the movie.  Not this is purely based on my own speculation and nothing else but, should I somehow turn out to be correct this could be considered SPOILRES so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Okay, so here we go….

Rey will be a Skywalker/Solo

I don’t think Rey will turn out to be Luke’s daughter but she could be Han and Leia’s.  It’s possible that Leia revealed this to her during the events of the Force Awakens (Which we may see in a flashback).  It kind of makes sense that they hid Rey to protect her from Kylo Ren after he turned to the darkside, fearing that he may try to seduce her (or at least Snoke would).  This would explain Rey’s natural ability to fly the Falcon and her string force abilities.

Poe is force sensitive

I think it will be heavily hinted at or even directly mentioned that Poe Dameron is force sensitive.  If you’ve read the Shattered Empire comic you’ll know that Poe’s mother helped Luke Skywalker to retrieve a force tree from one of The Emperor’s many facilities containing obtained Jedi artefacts.  As a thank you for her assistant Luke gave Poe’s mum a sample of the tree which she planted on Yavin 4 (which is where she retired after leaving the Rebellion).   It’s possible that this tree influenced Poe’s development and allowed him to become force sensitive?  The evidence would seem to suggest that, especially given his piloting abilities.

We’ll never find out what happened to Finn’s parents

I think they will leave this aspect of Finn’s past unanswered.  If the First Order kidnapped and raised lots of children to fill their ranks, as they did with Finn then it is not outside the realm of possibility that they just don’t keep any records of who they took the kids from (as the just don’t care).

Lando will get a name check

I think Leia will mention him at some point and we may even learn of his fate (Possibly at Han’s funeral?).  As much as it pains me to write it I don’t think we’ll physically see Lando in the movie.

We’ll get a few Rebels references

As with Rogue One I think we may get at least one Rebels mention.  Ezra seems like a good call.  Perhaps we’ll learn that he joined Luke’s Jedi Academy, or maybe we’ll see Chopper in the background of a shot (Like in Rogue One).  It’s tricky though as the final session has yet to end, but you never know.

Luke will not die

I think killing off Luke in this movie will be a very bad move.  I think he may stay on Ach-To once Rey leaves him to go back to the resistance and that after she gets captured by Snoke he will leave to go rescue her.  Which leads me onto…

Kylo Ren will seek out Luke’s help

I think the movie is going to have a strong redemption arc for Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and I think the film will end with Rey being captured by Snoke and Kylo Ren abandoning the First Order to go and seek Luke and for his help in getting her back.  If Rey is Kylo’s sister then this would make sense.  Rey could be the person to make him question his place in the balance of the force.  Seeing Rey captured and tortured could be enough to convince him to desert the dark path and come back into the light.  It would also be a good way of reconciling Luke’s failure to stop Ben Solo from turning to the darkside.  Perhaps Rey will go to Leia first and the two of them will go to find Luke.

What's on my painting table? - Warhammer Underworlds Shadespire

I recently picked up a copy of Warhammer Underworlds Shadespire and decide to paint up the Stormcast warband (as this is the one I want to use in future games).  It took me a few days to get them done (with a week’s breaks in-between) but I’m really happy with the results.

Steelheart’s Champions.  I decided to go with a silver and red paint scheme for the armor of this war band.

What's on my Painting Table - More imperial Assault

This weekend I’ve been able to find some time to paint up a few more of my Imperial Assault miniatures (as well as finish my Kharadron Overlords Ether Chemist).

Boba Fett (for some reason I just couldn't get the focus right when taking this photo)

Better Boba Fett photo

Imperial Probe Droid

My second Jawa.

Utinni!
My next painting project will be to finish some more of my Kharadron Overlords and Death Guard though with the new Necromunda coming out I’m tempted to dig our my old Goliath gang and paint them up.

X-Wing - New Rules, New lists!

As some of you may know Fantasy Flight recently released a new FAQ and rules update for Star Wars X-Wing.    This update saw some BIG changes to some pilot cards which I currently use in some of my lists.  In particular I’m thinking of Biggs Darklighter and Dengar.

In my opinion some of these updates are welcome whilst others seem a little too harsh.  For example I believed the Jumpmaster did need some nurfing.  This ship was frequently popping up in tournaments as a cheap gunboat and the removal of the torpedo upgrade slot seemed a good way to reduce the power of it.  However the loss of the astromech slot seems to go a bit too far.  This means I’ll have to rethink my Dengar list, as I was running him with the unhinged astromech to give him some much needed green manoeuvres.  However my biggest grip is the change they made to Biggs!

For those of you who are unfamiliar Biggs pilot ability is now“one use only”.  This pretty much makes him useless and it has meant that I’ve had to drop him from my most successful list and do a bit of a rethink.

Originally Biggs featured in a list with 2 Blue Squadron B-wings and an A-wing.   Biggs was in the list to do one job, which is to take the fire of the B-wings long enough for them to launch their torpedoes and do some damage before becoming targets themselves.  However this strategy has now gone out of the airlock.

After some carful thinking this is the new list I’ve come up with for my B-Wings.

2 x Blue Squadron Pilot’s
Flechette Torpeadoes
Fire Control System
Guidance Chips

Braylen Stramm
R2-D6
Nien Nunb
Alliance Overhaul
Rage

Sabine Wren
Sabine's Masterpiece
Rey
Intensity

Biggs has now been replaced by Braylen Stramm, who is the same points cost as Biggs, has the same attack characteristic (when you give her the Alliance Overhaul title) but more hull, more shields oh and a rear firing arc!  Adding R2-D6 lets me give her an elite pilot skill, which in this case is Rage, which seems to fit nicely with her pilot ability as in theory she can Rage (To focus and reroll attack dice), do a green manoeuvre to clear one stress and use her pilot ability to try and clear the other.

This also give me another hard hitting ship in my fleet, which forces my opponent to decided whether to go after the Arc or the B-Wings, as both can do some serious damage.

When finding a replacement for Biggs I also decided to drop the A-wing and instead I decided to give Sabine Wren a shot.  For 20 points I can give her ship the title card, Intensity elite Pilot Skill and Rey crew which fit really well with her pilot ability.  In theory I can boost/barrel roll, activate Intensity to evade, do my manoeuvre, focus as an action and then if I don’t use the focus, pile it on Rey or discard it to flip Intensity back over again.

Next, test them out and report back on how it goes.  May the Force be with me!

What's on my painting table? - Imperial Assault miniatures

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything so I thought I’d put some images up of the Imperial Assault miniatures I finished a few months ago.

I’m relatively new to this game having only recently gotten into it but I thought I’d give painting some of the characters a try.  Here are my end results.

5 things i've been up to...

1.

Next Saturday I’m TO’ing a Star Wars Destiny tournament at Kirton Games.  This is the first tournament to make use of the new Empire at War expansion and I’m keen to see what people make of these cards and what new decks might emerge around them.  I’m going to be using a Elite Chewie/Rey (From the 2-player game) build and have themed it around the group who travel to Ahco-To to find Luke Skywalker and the end of the Force Awakens.  Naturally there are few new cards in there from both the 2-player set and Empire at War.  I especially like the Roll on card!  I’m also working on an Elite K-2SO deck, but with 10 points left over I’m just not sure who to pair him with.

2.

I’ve started to expand my Kharadron Overlords army and now have a Frigate, which I have assembled and undercoated.  This latest addition has pushed my army size up to 1,120 points, so still a way to go until I get to my 2,000 point goal for the Sigma tournament in December.  Next to buy will either be another Arknaut company or another Frigate.

3.

It’s been a big month for Death Guard with GW releasing the miniatures from the range.  Naturally I have purchased a few that I have had my eye on including a unit of 3 Death shroud and the new Typhus miniature.  When they first released pictures of Typhus I wasn’t convinced but I am happy to say that it looks a lot better in person than in the images.  The scare is also impressive, especially when you compare him to the original model.

4.

I’ve been getting some practice in for a team X-Wing tournament which is in a few weeks’ time (I have a lot of Star Wars themed tournaments coming up!).  The format for this tournament see’s teams of 3 picking a faction each to play.  I’m playing Scum and I’m currently testing out a 2 IG-88 1 x Quadjumper list.  I’m intrigued as to how this tournament will go, either way it will be a lot of fun.

5.

I’ve managed to watch the first 2 episodes of Star Trek Discovery.  Overall, I was really impressed and can’t wait to see the rest of the series.  The production values were of feature film quality and you can see that they’ve put their budget up on the screen.   I also feel that they have some interesting characters to develop and a good story arc.  My only criticism with the show is the Klingons, who didn’t look or feel anything like the ones we are familiar with in TOS and TNG.  Infact they were that far removed from them that they felt like a completely new alien race, so I wondered why they didn’t just do that.  I’m hoping that this maybe explained a little later in the series, especially as they’ve taken care to keep the design of the other TOS props, such as the Phasers and Communicators.  However it feels great to see Star Trek back on TV, and let’s hope this series lives long and prospers (As Spock may say) .
