This weekend I took part in the South West Regional X-Wing Championship
being held in Crediton and hosted by Kirton Games. Although I’ve entered a few X-Wing
tournaments before (and even managed to do rather well in some of them) I’ve
never being to one on this scale. During
the event we played 6 games, after which there was a cut and the top 16 went
onto play knock out rounds to get to the final (which got them a place in the
National Championship). Unsurprisingly I
didn’t make the cut. I didn’t even make
it into the top 64! Having lost 4 games and winning two I ended up 85th
(Out of 98) but I didn’t care. I went to
regionals not to win but to have fun (and to find an excuse to wear my Princess
Leia costume!) and fun I did indeed have.
Although it was a long day spirits were high throughout and I’m happy to
say that every game I played in was well spirited.
There were a lot of strong lists out there, with a lot of
variation in the builds but if there was an overall theme running through out
them I would say that it would be s that of maximizing the amount of actions
your ships can perform. For my list I decided
to try out the new U-Wing as a support vessel for two tanked out Y-wings. I was going for Rogue One themed list, here’s
what I came up with…
Cassian Andor (27)
Jan Ors (2)
Jyn Erso (2)
Advanced Sensors (3)
Adaptability (0)
Seismic Torpedo’s (2)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Shield Upgrade (4)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
Targeting Astromech (2)
Seismic Torpedo’s (2)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Shield Upgrade (4)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
Targeting Astromech (2)
Seismic Torpedo’s (2)
Overall this isn’t the best list I’ve ever come up
with. Originally, I was going to have
Nora Wexley in there in place of one of the two Y-wings but for whatever reason
I decided to ditch her in favour of having the two Y’s. Looking back on things I think I over equipped
them as well. The Seismic torpedoes,
although fun was a bit hit and miss. If I
had dropped them I could have given Cassian Push the Limit (in place of Adaptability). Equally the shield upgrades were probably not
worth it. With those extra points, I could
have stuck a Z-95 in there or gone for a named pilot on one of the Y-Wings. This is certainly not a competitive list in
its current form and as such I don’t think I’ll be using it again, so it will
be back to the drawing board with the U-Wing!
However, having seen a lot of good lists at play during
the tournament I’ve already started planning my next one, which is going to be Scum
themed (and will be having Manaroo and IG-88 in it).
Here a few snaps from the day (Mostly ones of me in my
Leia costume!) but if you head over to Kirton Games Facebook and YouTube pages
page you can see many more from the tournament
