Lava bases - a step-by-step guide.

As requested here’s my step-by-step guide to creating a lava base for yoour minatures.

First add some rock texture to your base.  I made mine using cork, which once dried I coated with sand.  Make sure you add a layer of watered downed PVA wood glue to the sand once it has dried to help secure it to the cork.  I then painted the rocks using a basecoat of Abaddon Black and two dry brushed layers of Mechanicus Standard Grey and Dawnstone.

Next paint the base Khorne Red

Whilst the Khorne Red is still wet apply a coat of Evil Sunz Scarlet to the base.  Making sure that you leave some Khorne Red showing next to the rocks.

Next add a layer of Troll Slayer Orange and once dried a layer of Yriel Yellow.  With each layer you want to be building up the brightness of the colours.  This represents the lava being cooler near the rocks and hotter towards the centre.

To add a nice hot glow to my Lava I then applied some Dorn Yellow to help highlight the hot areas.  This is a Citadel edge paint so you’ll ned to order it direct from GW (As they don’t stock it as part of their regular paint range).

Finally apply some White Scar to add some final highlighting to the hot areas.  Once dry you’ll have your lava base.  You could add a layer of ‘Ardcoat to give it a more glossy appearance ot you can leave it as is.
